In this podcast episode, I introduce a simple model regarding the legacies you create as a parent when you choose to lead your children.  These legacies are the enduring and invaluable 'gifts' that you pass along by sharing stories and insights to your children.  The model categorizes these legacies into 3 areas: the Joy Legacies, the Growth Legacies, and the Success Legacies.

The objectives of the episode are for you to:

  • Develop an understanding of the 3 legacy areas and the specific legacies in each area
  • Create the belief that you possess the stories and insights from your own life to pass along these legacies to your own children
  • Gain access to resources and a community to build your confidence and capability to lead as a parent

Key Takeaways in the Episode -

  • You heard that right, I put my finger in my eye a lot.  It sounds weird; it is weird.  Funny thing is, it is one of the first legacies I have passed onto my children, as both my sons do the same thing.
  • I have a lot of gratitude for my two dads.  I have launched this podcast and website on the week of Father's Day because I know it is one way to create the type of legacy my two dad's have passed on to me.  I hope you enjoy the story behind the podcast artwork as well, and know why I choose that image.

    • You heard that right, I put my finger in my eye a lot.  It sounds weird; it is weird.  Funny thing is, it is one of the first legacies I have passed onto my children, as both my sons do the same thing.

    • I introduce the concept of 'legacy', and how it can simply mean something that you leave behind for those that follow you in life.  While the term can be construed as somewhat morbid, I like how the term 'legacy' can help you to think about a hopeful future, and to create a sense of urgency to create the future you desire as a parent and for your kids.  (6:03)
    • The first legacy type I cover are the 'Joy' legacies.  These legacies relate to the first four levels of human needs (Certainty, Variety, Significance, and Love & Connection).  These include aspects of your life such as your Faith, Values, Strengths, and Relationships.  You can pass along these legacies to your children when you choose to inspire them through your stories and insights in these areas.  How well you connect with your kids emotionally through stories will factor heavily in how well you can influence them to create Joy in their life. (11:24)
    • The second legacy type I cover are the 'Growth' legacies.  These legacies relate to the fifth level of human need - Growth.  These include aspects of your life such as your Vision, Life Experiences, and Role Models.  You can pass along these legacies to your children when you choose to guide them as they are determining and experiencing their own growth journey.  Children need to evolve into higher stages of adulthood, which can only happen when they make choices, experience  outcomes, and reflect on their success or failure.  When you give children the space to grow, and guide them through stories of your own life journey, you are passing along the legacies that create Growth in their life.  (16:55)
    • The third legacy type I cover are the 'Success' legacies.  These legacies relate to the highest level of human need - Creating Impact.  These include aspects of your life such as your Goals, Habits, and Impacts you have made on others.   You can pass along these legacies to your children when you choose to support them versus telling them what to do, or smothering their performance.  Children need to learn how to set goals themselves, and connect them to their longer term aspirations and internal motivators (such as purpose), so that they can drive their own performance at the highest level.  As a parent, you can foster an environment that supports their performance, and help to create a connection between their individual success and positively impacting others.  Our stories and insights of how we have been able to see success in our lives, and to contribute to positively helping others, can create the most impactful legacy of all. (22:29)
    • In summary, when you focus on Inspiring, Guiding, and Supporting your children, you are leading them as a parent.  You are also creating Joy, Growth, and Success in their lives, your legacies created by having your children learn from and adopt aspects of your life journey.  The result - your kids are prospering, and as a parent you are prospering because you experience Joy, Growth, and Success yourself. (26:26)
